Amelia Blake
Old Horses
self-relased

This cd by Amelia Blake is pleasant, and by pleasant I don't mean boring. It's laid-back and cool rather than urgent. Blake's been around and learned to use the small gestures to get her point across. You might call this music Americana.

"Old Horses" is stately a song that puts the focus on Blake's warm vocals. "City of the Dead" is a poignant tale of a bigoted town. Blake's words are sharp and honest. "Are You calling" sounds like Bonnie Raitt hooking up with Gillian Welch. The song is immediate yet subtle in its approach. "Right Man, Wrong Time" is a marvellous song. Blake's emotive singing gets to the heart of this tale of love in vain.

"Old Horses" is a brilliant album.
