Julianna Barwick
The Magic Place
Asthmatic Kitty Records

Julianna Barwick has an unusual way of making ethereal music. She uses her voice in novel ways on this aptly titled album.

Opener "Envelop" sees her use celestial harmonies and is replete with wordless wonderment as Barwick sings quietly to herself. It's almost as if the listener is eavesdropping at a private conversation. "Vow" sees her continue to weave her magic in the most becoming way. It's as austere and enigmatic as a convent, yet full of quiet joy. Barwick doesn't raise her voice once; she just keeps making these quiet marvels.
