Kathryn Smith
With Every Breath I Take
Kat Production

Kathryn Smith's debut album has some classy versions of jazz standards and some unexpected songs. She sings, "I Get Along Without You Very Well" and imbues it with a graceful longing to match the peerless backing. "My Attorney Bernie" gets a light, dreamy reading that brings out hidden depths to the song. Joni Mitchell's "Urge for Going" gets a reading that brings out its folksy roots. Smith's vocal is delicate and has a beauty all its own.

"Nothing Beats the Memories" is a song by Smith's producer and it's a light bossa that she handles well. It's a strong debut all told.
