The Gin Club
Deathwish
Plus One Records

The Gin Club has a varied sound, taking in all sorts of influences across these tracks. "Say You Will" is a becalmed ballad, not unlike some others by the Go-Betweens. It betrays a slight country influence, which helps it stand out. The title song sees them head for a more epic sound and succeed well with that. The lead vocal is worn and rugged, as if it's creaking with emotion. "Slow Down" is a more countrified song with a confident swagger that the band handle with expertise. "Milli Vanilli" has a rare female vocal and she sings of transient things, fitting given the title. It's a remarkably rich and rewarding album.
