Zera Vaughan
Back to the Roots
self-released

Zera Vaughan's multi-cultural background makes her a natural for this style of worldly, yet very urban music. She sings like Natacha Atlas and her collaborators W.S.L provide haunting backdrops.

Opener "Almaz" with its wails and sweet melody is an instant hit. She sings Sting's "Fragile", a song beloved by jazz singers all over, and Vaughan gives it a sensitive yet original reading. "Voir" is sung in French and given an Oriental backdrop that makes for a sensual song. "Le temps qui passé" is moving and melancholy, Vaughan at her best. Her debut is a multi-faceted and intriguing record.
